Every year in August, the city of Nis and Nis fortress open their doors to more than 100 000 jazz lovers who go far lengths to attend another Nisville festival. This music gathering is much more than just another music festival. Namely, every year, anyone interested in jazz music can enrich their knowledge by attending various workshops given by the performers and by taking part in discussions. Bringing the top class musicians to the enthusiastic audience,Nisville has been listed as one of the most popular jazz festival in the South-East Europe and was granted “The Best of Serbia in 2011” Award.

The festival is conceptualized on the idea of promoting both canonic jazz forms and the fusion of jazz with the musical tradition of different countries and regions. A special emphasis has been put on the promotion of the Balkan jazz sound, glorifying the work of Šaban Bajramović, what made this sound a new trend on world jazz stage. The opening of the festival is traditionally preceded by the pre-festival concert given at the river stage at the quay amphitheater, next to Šaban Bajramović monument. The main part of the festival program is opened and closed by the ensembles from Niš.

The rich program of the festival is proven by the fact that there are several venues where performances are given during every festival day. Those situated in the fortress are main stage, located on the fortress summer stage, open stage, usually located at the Pavillion, and youth stage, opposite of the art gallery Salon 77.  Leaving the fortress, on your way to the center, you will hit the welcome stage at the fortress bridge, then matinee stage at Kalča shopping center. The other two are river stage at the quay amphiteater and midnight jam stage at university yard in Banovina, a building across the street from fortress. On every venue, a group of volunteers welcomes the guests and provides all the necessary information. It is easy to recognize them: the official festival mascot is bee, so the hostesses are dressed as ladybirds and bees  and each and every volunteer wears a tee-shirt with a bee print. What this festival is also unique about is that everything dealing with organization and realization of organization plans is done by the volunteers coming from country and abroad.

Over its history, the festival hosted the leading performers of  jazz and world music scene, such as amazing Candy Dulfer, Solomon Burke, Blues Brothers, Billy Cobham, Chico Freeman, Grace Kelly,Larry Coryell,Lenny White,  Roy Hargrove, Joe “Defunkt” Bowie,Stanley Jordan,Teodosi Spasov, Esma Redžepova,Šaban Bajramović, Vlatko Stefanoski, Bora Dugić and many others.

Nisville festival has a regular audience that is very welcoming, just as the entire city of Nis is. Besides great music program, the parties and hanging-around events are organized all over the town in small jazz cafes, most popular of which is “Truba”. In addition, the food is delish. Just the smell of Nis barbeque is making your stomach crave for it, while the quince rakia is an excellent drink to give yourself in to this oriental and hedonistic atmosphere of Nis and Nisville festival.
