The end of July and beginning of August attract many unsigned rock bands of East Serbia and the wider region to the beautiful Kraljevica Park in Zaječar where they gather together to compete for the prestigious award at the Guitar Festival.
Gitarijada Guitar Festival is one of the leading music festivals in East Serbia. Founded in 1966 by Momčilo Radenković, a guitar player in Yugoslav rock band “Zlatni prsti,” this festival has been promoting young, unsigned, demo rock bands and providing the support for their affirmation on the rock music scene. The winner of the “battle of bands” is given an opportunity to get a record deal with one of the leading labels, and the media promotion. The mission of the festival is to promote and encourage the musical creativity of young people, especially of those who are fans of Rock and Roll Music world.
Rock the World in Zaječar
The festival offers a variety of choices when it comes to the music program. Several stages are set to please the demand of the excited crowd. In addition to the competing bands, the festival traditionally hosts the established national and foreign bands and performers. Moreover, some of the present famous rock bands in Serbia were once competitors, such as Galija, Crna Ruža and others.Some of the greatest names in the world of Serbian and former Yugoslavian rock music, such as Bajaga, Prljavo Kazalište, Kerber, Riblja Čorba, Yu Grupa, Atomsko sklonište, Van Gogh etc. appeared on the main stage of the festival, the Rock stage. The last edition of the concert also included the World Music Stage, on which Balkan Strings band gave performance, andthe Guitar Art stage, where music students, as well as everyone interested, could attend workshops and thus enhance their knowledge of the subject. Another stage is Felix Romuilana stage, wherethe opening ceremony of the 48th Guitar festival took placeaccompanied by Viva Vox, a renowned vocal ensemble.
Traditionally, an annual meeting of bikers takes place within the guitar festival. In addition to demo bands competing at the Bike Stage of the festival, the visitors can also enjoy in motorcycle acrobatics, parade and motorcycle race. The range of activities at the festival is quite wide and includesfestival exhibitions, numerous workshops, book promotions, documentaries, public lectures and debates. The festival in its entirety is a cultural whole, offering its visitors the view on rock music and rock world from different perspectives.
Kraljevica Is Rocking!
For youth of East Serbia, this festival is the central event of the summer. The festival is free, so it is affordable to anyone, especially teenagers and students, so they amount to the majority of festival audience.Some come to cheer for their friends in the competition part, while other enjoy in the free concerts of the best rockers of Serbia and region. What is special about Gitarijada Guitar Festival is the fact that even though there are no extravagant lights or decoration, it still offers a superb show where people want to just one – rock the world.
